| “NYSUT – a union of professionals” Attending the NYSUT Representative Assembly in Washington, D.C, was Jason Carter, Beth Peters and Tom Seimbor. Louise Ortman won the election to be our regional representative on the NYSUT Board of Directors. We had voted to give her our endorsement and encouraged others to vote for her as well. She is currently the President of the Bloomfield Teachers Association. 4 General Sessions were held over the course of 2 and ˝ days. All WTA representatives attended all sessions: including New Delegate orientation, Members Benefits Information on Display, and committees for Educational Issues II and Legislative Political Action I. Guest Speakers included: Senator Hilary Clinton, Governor Elliot Spitzer, Comptroller Tom DiNapoli, US Congressman John Hall, and Commissioner Richard Mills. AFT President Ed McElroy, NYS AFL-CIO’s President Dennis Hughes, and NEA’s Lily Eskelson also presented. Along with the usual annual reports on budget and affairs, 61 resolutions were reviewed and a budget proposal seeking increases for NSYUT member dues (not effecting former NEA members at this time) was passed. Special orders of business were presented and discussed on the floor of the assembly as well. Resolutions were debated in one of 9 committees: Civil and Human Rights, College and University, Educational Issues I, Educational Issues II, Healthcare and Workplace Safety, Legislative and Political Action I, Legislative and Political Action II, Organization, and Pension and Retirement. Each committee then reported out to the general assembly what their collective recommendation was for each recommendation and then the assembly voted to uphold or change the committee’s recommendations.
